But that’s not the case now imho. The ocean does not protect us and we are not self sufficient. War can be waged electronically, via long range hypo-sonic missiles, and in space, and biologically. If anything, it would seem we have even more self-interest in opposing bad actors to the liberal order than we used to, and more ways for bad actors to cause disruption, than in the 1910s and 1940s. And the bad actors have the ability to act almost instantaneously.
These conditions lead me to conclude that being absent from the world order does not help us be safe, it makes us more vulnerable to injury and disruption.
